How can I get involved?

​There are many ways to help those in our community who are without permanent shelter.

Day Shelter Volunteer

Day Shelter volunteers welcome guests, facilitate shower schedules, interact with guests (playing games, chatting, etc.), help with cleaning, donation organization, and more. ​

Meal Provider

Prepare a meal for guests. If you would like to stay and help serve the meal, you are welcome to do so.

Other Needs

We are always looking for people who have a heart for serving and would love to chat with you about unique ways you or your organization could support the ongoing work of Out of the Cold. Email us at [email protected] and let's find the perfect area of service for you.

Evening Host

from 6:00-8:00 pm:  Evening hosts help with check in, serving dinner, facilitating showers and laundry, interacting with guests (playing games, chatting, etc.), cleaning and more. ​

Thanks to the strong support of our community, we purchased our building at 318 South Atherton! Now we are fundraising to hire additional staff, maintain the shelter, provide guests with supplies, identification, food and clothing.

Item Donation Needs

Thank you for your desire to support Out of the Cold through your donations and giving!

These items can be dropped off outside of the day shelter at the rear porch entrance. The day shelter is located at 318 S. Atherton Street in State College. Parking is in the rear of the building and can be accessed from Nittany or Foster Street via H Alley. Hours for donation drop-off are 9am-5pm, Monday-Friday. 

Our Shelter Wish List:

Food/Paper Products
  • Grab and go snacks that are individually wrapped (granola bars, cracker packs, nuts, fruit packs, etc.)
  • Drink mixes for making lemonade, iced tea, etc.
Clothing
  • No specifics needed at this time
Cleaning Supplies/Toiletries
  • Hand soap
  • Disinfectant wipes
  • Razors and toiletries
Gift Cards
  • Gift cards to local grocery in denominations of $25 or $50
  • Gift Cards to local restaurants in ($25 and below)
  • Gift cards to Goodwill or Ollies for essential clothing items in denominations of $25

We have limited storage for blanket donations. Please consider donating these items to other local agencies or thrift shops. ​

The day shelter and resource center is open 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and is located at 318 South Atherton Street in State College, PA.

​Our night shelter operates from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m.

 OOTC is a registered non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that was established in February 2011 by the Community Safety Net (CSN), which serves residents of Centre County, Pennsylvania. ​
